when i moved into my apartment, i had this grand idea that i would do a series of “before and afters” after each piece of the apartment was completed.  well, a year later, no single room is completely done.  the bathroom is going to get a new shower, i have no lamps in my bedroom (or artwork), and the kitchen is still awaiting a backsplash.  so, i thought i would show you the current state of my living room.

not much as changed since my last apartment, though it certainly feels more spacious since my place is much bigger.

living room 1 the purple stools are from target (sold out now).  side tables are ikea, and sofa is mitchell gold liam.  the acrylic cubes are pb teen, but i can’t find them online anymore.living room 2 wooden lamp is from jcpenney.living room 3 my gallery wall as grown considerably since this post.living room 4 tv stand is ikea.  that empty corner will get a chair at some point.living room 5these roses were just too pretty to not have their close-up.

small details

26 Sunday Oct 2014

i’m still in the process of updating my apartment, and i’ve realized that even the smallest detail makes a huge difference.  for instance,  i documented my bathroom makeover here, but one thing that drove me crazy was the toilet handle that came with the toilet.  since it was far too modern for the style, i ended up buying a new handle.  the new handle makes me happy every time i…you know…flush.

bathroom makeover

13 Sunday Apr 2014

when i moved into my new place, the bathroom was in a sad state.  the walls were painted a glossy blue, the wood on the vanity was cheap (and warped), and the medicine cabinets made the space feel smaller than it already was.  since this is the first home i have purchased (!), i wanted to be very smart about the remodeling decisions i made.

i didn’t think ahead to take pictures of the “before,” but here is the photo from the original listing:

the professional lighting makes it look much nicer than it was.  i repainted the space (using benjamin moore’s “simply white”) and switched out the vanity, medicine cabinet, light fixture, and toilet.  i don’t love the floor tiles, but they are in good shape and are too expensive to redo.

here is the after:bathroom 1 the new toilet is the “memoirs” toilet from kohler.bathroom 2 bathroom 3 i feel like the gorgeous new faucet (by watermark) deserves another look.bathroom 4i am so in love with the changes.  i want to eventually completely remodel the shower (the tiles are depressing), but will need to save a bit more before i can.

small change, big impact

when i moved into my new apartment, the living room and bedroom had awful brown blinds.  notwithstanding the fact that they were broken, i just hated seeing the brown the moment i walked through the door.

luckily, new custom blinds were fairly inexpensive and easy to install from select blinds.com.  it may be hard to tell in pictures, but this switch has made a huge impact in my new space.

refinished chest

02 Saturday Feb 2013

i wish i had before/after pictures of this chest, but i sadly did not think that far ahead.  just imagine it dark brown wood, with brass door-knocker style handles.

a fresh coat of white paint and clear knobs have made all the difference, and it is now much more in sync with my current decor style.

since the chest is right by my door, it is a landing spot for my keys, random odds and ends, and the jewelry i wear everyday.

madeline weinrib rug

20 Tuesday Nov 2012

as i have gotten older, i have tried to be more deliberate about my purchases.  therefore, when it came to decorating my apartment, i spent a lot of time thinking and creating moodboards.  while planning before shopping is very important, i have realized that you also need to have a bit of room for an impulse purchase that simply moves you.

case in point: when i was digging through the ABC carpet basement rug sale, i came across this amazing madeline weinrib rug.  it is so unlike anything i was looking for, but makes such a statement (and really ties my apartment together).  i am so in love.

more apartment pictures to come!  it is so rewarding to see everything coming together.

apartment moodboard: real life

05 Friday Oct 2012

since my last moodboard was a fantasy, i thought i should do one with pieces that i already own.  i have everything in this set except the floor lamp, the rug, and the pink pillow.  i will need to get a floor lamp and a rug for my new place.

apartment moodboard

02 Tuesday Oct 2012

since i just moved, i have been slowly sourcing pieces for my new place.  i have some furniture from my old place, but am replacing a handful of key items.

most importantly, it is time for a grown up sofa.  my old sofa was faithful, but the misshapen seats and odd beige color now look a little sad.

when i found this mitchell gold + bob williams liam sofa in a gorgeous navy with nailhead trim on sale at the outlet, i hesitated at first.  i was fixated on going as neutral as possible for a sofa, because it is such a big investment.  but my good friend becca assuaged my fears, reminding me that 1) navy is a neutral and 2) i can make it look classic by toning down the rest of the pieces.  after putting this moodboard together, turns out she was absolutely right.

the sofa is now mine.  now if i could only afford the rest of these pieces…

i never understood why someone would spend so much on a candle until i got one as a gift.  now, i am utterly.hopelessly.addicted.
