spring cleaning

17 Sunday Apr 2016

in my marie kondo phase, i donated my label maker since i had not used in in years and it definitely did not spark joy.  however, when i was decanting some dried goods into my blue mason jars, i found myself wishing i hadn’t been so hasty.  luckily, i soon realized that a white paint pen achieves the same goal and looks so much prettier.

jarsif you mess up when writing, i found that the writing comes off pretty easily by scrubbing with the rough side of a sponge.

i did my best while i was in france to keep my shopping in line with my new marie kondo’ed apartment – i did not purchase anything that did not spark joy.  i also tried to focus on buying things that would both serve a purpose in my life while also reminding me of my wonderful trip.

here is what i came home with:

france shopping{from top:  woven market basket with leather handles; eric bombard cashmere sweaters (side note, the black has navy lace panels down the side – it definitely deserves its own post); chanel cat eye sunglasses; blue stuffed elephant from tartan et chocolate; lavender-filled satchets}

bedroom makeover

14 Monday Sep 2015

my apartment makeover is continuing in baby steps, mostly because of the crazy amount of traveling i have been doing this year.  next up is the bedroom.

here are some before pictures from the day i moved in:

bedroom before 1 the same sad taupe wall paint.bedroom before 2 with furniture.  why is there a random shelf in the corner???hallway beforehallway from bedroom looking into the bathroom (also pre-makeover).

and now the best part – the after.

bedroom after 1 i got a proper bed from anthropologie to replace the metal frame my mattress had been on.  bedroom after 2 gorgeous bed linens, marble table lamp, and rug also from anthropologie.  i tend to stalk their sale section for home goods.

the mirrored chest is from one kings lane.bedroom after 3you can see that not much changed.  i painted the walls white and added furniture and accessories.

i got this print from a vintage store in philadelphia when i was visiting for a friend’s wedding.

arta look at the hallway after.hallway afterother than the paint, the only change was the light fixture.

i replaced the standard issue light with something much more lovely.

the life-changing magic of tidying up

like most people, i have been finding myself short on time these days.  i have spent a lot of the summer running around, and while i have had some amazing experiences, i was feeling pretty run down.  on top of that, although i really try to keep an edited apartment and wardrobe, i was becoming overwhelmed by the amount of stuff. my home was become more a source of stress and less the refuge i wanted it to be from hectic city life.

book

my good friend sarah from work was raving about this book, and i thought it was worth a try.  honestly, after a crazy week going through every drawer and cabinet in my apartment, i can say i am a convert.  plus, now every time i open my closet, i smile.  wanna take a look?

closet 1 like items with like, and then arranged lightest to darkest.closet 2 i still need to make better use of the vertical space, but it works for now.closet 3 tank topscloset 4 i don’t think my workout clothes have ever looked so pretty.closet 6marie kondo is right – folding sweaters vertical is so much better.  this method has created so much more space and has helped prevent wrinkles.

anyone who has spoken to me over the last few weeks knowing that i am a raving lunatic about this book now.  just a fair warning though – you might want to keep your family and significant others away if you try out the method.  a very important part of the process is thanking your belongings before you donate or recycle them, and i have to tell you, there is nothing like showing your boyfriend how crazy you are by spending a weekend talking to your spoons.

i thought it would be fun to post about my little every day indulgences.

muji notebooks and uchida le pens.  i spend all day writing (for work and pleasure) so nothing makes me happier than using lovely stationery.  while not the most expensive notebooks, they are a huge step up from the notepads and post-its that i used in the past.

stationery i swear these pens make everyone’s writing beautiful.uchida le pen china teacups and saucers, from teroforma.  i don’t drink tea, so i use these for my morning coffee.  it is such a civilized way to start the day.teroforma teapcups luxury candles.  one of my best friends gasped when she learned how much i spend on candles and exclaimed: “you are literally burning money!”  point taken.

this is a billy reid candle.  because of course he makes wonderful candles.

entry makeover

19 Tuesday May 2015

this is probably one of my smaller before and afters, but i really do love the changes i made in my apartment entry.  the entry was painted the same shiny taupe as the rest of the apartment, and it had a sad, standard-issue light.  it also had a weird, combo hanging hook situation.

hallway before 1 the aforementioned sad, standard-issue light.hallway before 2and here is the after.  it feels much calmer, and cleaner.

not sure why this picture is crooked…hallway after 1beautiful clear glass chandelier.  just feminine enough.hallway after 2hallway after 3

kitchen before and after

24 Tuesday Mar 2015

as with my bathroom makeover, i tried to be smart when deciding what to replace in the kitchen.  certain things, like the tile and countertop, would not have been my choice but were perfectly fine.  however, the green ceiling (again, high gloss paint…why???) had to go.  here is an unceremonious before shot from right after i moved:

kitchen before the holes are from a shelf that i removed.  this kitchen actually has a lot of storage, so it didn’t need any exposed storage in my opinion.  i think you can see the glossiness from the reflection of the light fixture on the wall.kitchen green oh that green.kitchen light before this was a pretty standard issue light, but did nothing for me.  also, it was brushed chrome, and i ended up switching all the metal to polished chrome.faucet before this faucet looked sad.  and leaky.  it probably leaked because it also felt sad.

and now, what you really want to see, the after:

kitchen after

fresh coat of paint in benjamin moore’s decorator’s white, pearl finish.  i know that kitchens and bathrooms shouldn’t have flat paint, but i refuse to use high gloss paint on walls.
kitchen after 2gorgeous gray glass tile mosaic from home depot.  since i couldn’t change the counters, i decided to work with them.  i think it makes the whole kitchen look much more expensive.kitchen backsplash after and my new faucet.  if it was possible to marry a faucet, this baby would have my heart.  it is grohe, and it is worth every penny.  kitchen faucet after and the light was switched for something a bit more modern, to go with the new fixtures.  thanks to restoration hardware.kitchen light afterall in all, i’m thrilled with the changes.  i didn’t end up doing much (paint, faucet, backsplash, new cabinet hardware, and new light fixture) but i think it feel much calmer and sleeker now.

clutter pitfalls

14 Saturday Feb 2015

in my efforts to simplify and clear the junk in my apartment, i came across four areas where i have accumulated so much (and for no reason).

1) shoe bags.  i remember when i was in high school and i bought my first pair of shoes that came with shoe bags.  i felt so fancy and swore i would keep those bags forever.  of course i promptly lost them, and now i have a mountain of shoe bags, like the closeted bag lady that i am.  it is good to keep a few (especially for traveling, because you don’t want your shoes to dirty everything else in your suitcase), but the rest are being recycled.

bags 2) random containers.  repeat after me: owning containers does not make you organized.  they are just vessels to store useless crap.  a few of the containers pictured below are from trips, so they will stay for sentimental reasons.  but the rest are outta here.  containers 3) kitchen gadgets.  this is a lettuce keeper.  2.5 years ago, when i moved to new york city, i decided that i needed this to keep all the lettuce i would surely be buying.  2.5 years later, it still has the plastic on it.  i hope someone at my local goodwill keeps (and eats) more lettuce than i do, and will provide this with a loving home.kitchen gadget 4) shoe boxes.  this one breaks my heart a little, because part of the thrill of purchasing beautiful footwear is the package it comes in.  i know a lot of people find other uses for shoe boxes, but i have accepted that i am not one of those people.  my shoe boxes sit in my closet, mocking me for all the vital space they are taking up.  my 650 square foot slice of manhattan does not have room for shoe boxes (or mockery for that matter).  to the recycle bin, shoe boxes.  i will not let you defeat me any longer.shoe boxes
