polaroids as home decor

27 Thursday Dec 2012

i am always looking for ways to incorporate the polaroids i have taken over the years into my home decor, and i have so far come with two.

first: put stacks of polaroids in a decorative bowl.  it encourages both you and your guests to rifle through them on a whim, and relive some old memories.

polaroid 1polaroid 4two:  arrange polaroids in a grid and frame them, using a simple black frame and a white mat.  i used some of my favorite images from my trip to paris in september.

polaroid 2because i wanted to add some dimension, i loosely taped the polaroids down onto the backing, instead of glueing them.  this will allow me to switch out the images later if i want, and gives the whole piece a more organic feel.

20 Thursday Dec 2012

this is one of my favorite times in the year to be in nyc.  the crowds can be intense, but the beautiful lights make it worth braving the crazy shoppers.  here are some shots from my stroll down fifth avenue. (warning: picture heavy post!).

perfect pieces: the gray t-shirt

15 Saturday Dec 2012

on a recent trip to bloomingdales, i discovered the perfect (for me) gray t-shirt.  it is designed by celebrity stylist leslie fremar, and produced by fruit of the loom.

key features: 1) 100% cotton; 2) french seam running down the back; 3) thick enough to wear alone but thin enough to layer; 4) long length and 5) relatively inexpensive (3 for $50)

chocolate mousse

09 Sunday Dec 2012

with the holiday season coming up, i have been looking for ways to satisfy my sweet tooth without indulging too much.  this chocolate mousse does the trick, especially when topped with fresh blueberries.

mast brothers chocolate – williamsburg

02 Sunday Dec 2012

we made a pit stop at mast brothers chocolate while in williamsburg the other weekend.  i didn’t have my good camera on me at the time, so i will leave you with a picture of what i bought.

i still haven’t opened them, because the wrapping paper is just too pretty.

i would highly recommend a trip to the store for those of you who haven’t been.  they do tours of the factory every day, so you can see how the chocolate is made and wrapped.

strawberry frozen yogurt

27 Tuesday Nov 2012

cooking fear #3: homemade frozen yogurt (or any ice cream for that matter).  i have never been able to get my ice cream or yogurt base to freeze properly in the past.  but after spending $5 for a cup of frozen yogurt from my local chain, i realized i had to conquer my fear.  $5 for yogurt and sugar is insane.

used this recipe.  a couple of changes: 1) i didn’t have rum so i used whiskey instead.  seemed to work fine (though it probably altered the taste).  2) didn’t think the calories for the full fat greek yogurt were worth it, so swapped it out for non-fat greek yogurt.  i am sure the full fat version is better, but this was delicious nonetheless.

madeline weinrib rug

20 Tuesday Nov 2012

as i have gotten older, i have tried to be more deliberate about my purchases.  therefore, when it came to decorating my apartment, i spent a lot of time thinking and creating moodboards.  while planning before shopping is very important, i have realized that you also need to have a bit of room for an impulse purchase that simply moves you.

case in point: when i was digging through the ABC carpet basement rug sale, i came across this amazing madeline weinrib rug.  it is so unlike anything i was looking for, but makes such a statement (and really ties my apartment together).  i am so in love.

more apartment pictures to come!  it is so rewarding to see everything coming together.

five leaves – williamsburg

13 Tuesday Nov 2012

i went to five leaves the other weekend for a lovely brunch in williamsburg.

the decor is a rustic and inviting (especially cozy on a cold day).

we ordered the ricotta pancakes, which were incredibly light and fluffy.

and oatmeal, to be healthy.

topped off with a warm cup of coffee.

i can’t wait to go back!

diy bow belt

25 Thursday Oct 2012

i have been coveting this see by chloe belt for some time, but could never bring myself to spend over $150 on a belt.

so during a recent afternoon when i was feeling crafty, i decided to try making one.  upon closer inspection, i figured i could just make a detachable bow.  then i could attach it to a belt i already had, and turn the buckle to the back.

after a bit of trial and error, this is the pattern i came up with.  i placed the pattern on some scrap leather i had (from my bookbinding days in college) and cut the shape out using a surgical scalpel (be careful if you want to try this at home!!!).

i then sewed the ends together to make a bow.

i then cut a small piece of leather to form the band across the middle, and hammered on some simple snap closures.  i bought the snap closures from jo-ann fabrics ($3 for a pack of 4).

voila!  all done.  i put the bow on one of my favorite yellow belts just to show out it fits.

the back of the bow.  i suppose you could also wear this as the front if you wanted.

i got so excited that i made another one in tan.

two little red hens

21 Sunday Oct 2012

this is the first time that i have lived on the upper east side, and i love exploring my new neighborhood.  this morning, i went to two little red hens – an adorable bakery with a huge selection.  this red velvet cupcake was gone about 3 minutes after i took this picture.
