small change, big impact

when i moved into my new apartment, the living room and bedroom had awful brown blinds.  notwithstanding the fact that they were broken, i just hated seeing the brown the moment i walked through the door.

luckily, new custom blinds were fairly inexpensive and easy to install from select blinds.com.  it may be hard to tell in pictures, but this switch has made a huge impact in my new space.

gallery wall

18 Saturday Jan 2014

i moved into a new (bigger!) apartment at the end of november, and i have been having a great time getting it into shape.  my first order of business was to paint the walls (previously a heinous glossy (why???) taupe) a matte light gray (i used benjamin moore’s moonshine in eggshell).  the reason the walls were so important to me is because my home never feels like a home until my art is up.

i fiddled around with the arrangement of my gallery wall since my last place, and i am much, much happier with it now.  i am by no means an art hanging expert, but here are a few things that i learned since then:

1) try to avoid mats.  most pictures don’t need them, and they tend to create unnecessary holes in a composition.

2) hang pictures in a set together.  i know this sounds silly, but i would try to mix and match everything before, which was clearly a mistake.

3) try to create horizontal or vertical lines of space between pictures throughout for harmony.  i used 3 such lines.

4) try to put the piece with the heaviest visual weight (in my case, the trumpet player drawing) in the center.  otherwise, it will tend to drag the eye to wherever it is placed.

5) don’t rush!  i never buy art to fill a space.  i buy what i love, and then i find a place for it later.

desk

31 Saturday Aug 2013

since my desk was actually clean for a brief moment, i thought i would snap a quick picture.  i bought the beautiful watercolor painting while i was india last year.

sorry for the slowdown in posts lately – i have some exciting news that i will be sharing soon!  until then, i am trying to stick to my shopping ban.

refinished chest

02 Saturday Feb 2013

i wish i had before/after pictures of this chest, but i sadly did not think that far ahead.  just imagine it dark brown wood, with brass door-knocker style handles.

full chest

a fresh coat of white paint and clear knobs have made all the difference, and it is now much more in sync with my current decor style.

since the chest is right by my door, it is a landing spot for my keys, random odds and ends, and the jewelry i wear everyday.

liam sofa

15 Tuesday Jan 2013

i finally got around to taking some pictures of my new sofa.  it is the liam sofa, by mitchell gold + bob williams.  it is makes the exact statement i was looking for, with its clean lines, lush blue velvet, and brass nailhead trim.  i am completely in love.

polaroids as home decor

27 Thursday Dec 2012

i am always looking for ways to incorporate the polaroids i have taken over the years into my home decor, and i have so far come with two.

first: put stacks of polaroids in a decorative bowl.  it encourages both you and your guests to rifle through them on a whim, and relive some old memories.

polaroid 1polaroid 4two:  arrange polaroids in a grid and frame them, using a simple black frame and a white mat.  i used some of my favorite images from my trip to paris in september.

polaroid 2because i wanted to add some dimension, i loosely taped the polaroids down onto the backing, instead of glueing them.  this will allow me to switch out the images later if i want, and gives the whole piece a more organic feel.

madeline weinrib rug

20 Tuesday Nov 2012

as i have gotten older, i have tried to be more deliberate about my purchases.  therefore, when it came to decorating my apartment, i spent a lot of time thinking and creating moodboards.  while planning before shopping is very important, i have realized that you also need to have a bit of room for an impulse purchase that simply moves you.

case in point: when i was digging through the ABC carpet basement rug sale, i came across this amazing madeline weinrib rug.  it is so unlike anything i was looking for, but makes such a statement (and really ties my apartment together).  i am so in love.

more apartment pictures to come!  it is so rewarding to see everything coming together.
