sale finds

my bathroom renovations are finally underway, and with them, a large portion of my budget is now devoted to the materials and labor costs.  therefore, my new year’s resolution was to go 3 months without buying any article of clothing/accessory.  i know this may not seem like a lot to many readers of this blog, but over the years, shopping has become such a hobby (and habit) that the restraint has required more resolve than i anticipated.

i’m not sure how many readers of this little corner of the internet stop by to see what is new to my closet, so i am going to devote a few posts to some recent acquisitions that you have not yet seen.  first up is this a.m.a.z.i.n.g blazer and shoes.  i do have a great foundation of basics in my wardrobe, but i found that it was lacking the charm of pieces that are not so versatile but are still so fun that they make you smile.

these items definitely make me smile (especially since they were both over 75% off!).

chloe drew sale find

23 Tuesday Aug 2016

when i first moved to nyc, i was so excited to complete my wardrobe with all my fabulous sample sale finds.  i had heard that sample sales (almost) made the noise, traffic, and the outrageously high rent prices in this city worth it.  well, almost 5 years later, i have exactly 0 items still in my closet from a sample sale.

chloe 1

or had.  this chloe beauty just called my name when i saw it.  the problem with most sample sales is that typically, only the most seasonal or trendy items make it to the sale, and people are often persuaded by the low price to purchase something they ordinarily would not.  and if you wouldn’t buy something full price, why would you buy it on sale?

this beautiful chloe drew bag definitely does not fall into that category.  it has the classic shape but includes pretty much the only colors that i wear.  the fact that it was so marked down is just the cherry on top.

i had so much fun exploring little italy nolita on a gorgeous saturday evening.  we walked around enjoying a street fair, and had drinks at the mulberry project.

sailor stripes 4eva

28 Saturday May 2016

i was doing very well with my shopping fast this spring because i decided that a new shower was more important than clothes.  but then i visited the isabel marant store in soho with a dear friend.  why are sailor stripes are so much more interesting than subway tiles?

isabel marant stripesin true marie condo style, i am trying to be more cognizant about what i bring into my home.  these definitely spark joy.

abc carpet and home

30 Saturday Apr 2016

if i had to pick a store in nyc to spend my last days in, it would definitely be abc carpet and home.  for those of you who have never been, it is a bigger, more eclectic, and sadly more expensive version of anthropologie.  i always find something there that inspires me, and luckily the prices are so out of my reach that my wallet is happy.

i stopped in last weekend, though, and they were having a sale on french linen towels and napkins.  oops.

vintage napkins

but look how pretty.

clinton street baking company

after many years living in nyc, i finally made it back to what is probably my favorite brunch spot in the city.  clinton street baking company’s infamous pancakes are just as good as everyone says, but the line always deterred me.  luckily, they opened a new location right next to the original restaurant, so when we arrived at 9am on sunday morning, we were seated right away.

scarpetta

04 Monday Apr 2016

i finally made it to scarpetta for a lovely dinner with my beau.

scarpetta 1 these are the accompaniments to the bread.  i accidentally took a bite of the eggplant before snapping this pic.  sorry (not really.  it was really good).scarpetta 2 the spaghetti, which is possibly the most famous dish on the menu.  and may have been the reason we were there in the first place.  if a bowl of spaghetti was ever worth $23, this was it.  it was light and yet filling, and had so much rich yet fresh flavor.  mmmmm.

cacao prieto distillery

07 Monday Mar 2016

on a recent (relatively) warm saturday, i finally took a trip down to red hook, brooklyn and toured the cacao prieto distillery.  cacao prieto is both a chocolate factory and a whiskey distillery, so it is basically heaven.  although they make one of my favorite bourbons, widow jane, it wasn’t until a friend told me that i realized that the distillery was a subway ride (an short uber) away.  and the chocolate?  that was the cherry on top.

IMG_4881 IMG_4882 $20 gets you a tour of both the chocolate and whiskey-making facilities, and tastings of both.IMG_4883 the most beautiful wrappers i have every seen.  sorry mast brothers.IMG_4884 IMG_4885 old school chocolate making machines.IMG_4886the whiskey distilling machine.  meeting the individuals who make these goods by hand gives you a good sense of the skill, care, and time it takes to make artisanal, local products.IMG_4888IMG_4889 my leopard isabel marants were key for standing during the 1 1/2 hour tour.IMG_4892raw cacao nibs.
IMG_4894they had chickens and a peacock in the courtyard.  because why not?

if anyone is looking for a fun and interesting excursion for a few hours in new york, i highly recommend the tour.  plus you can get some goodies to enjoy long after its over.

all about that lace

i have been meaning to post about the lace and cashmere sweater i described in this post from france.  i have been favoring classic items with lace details, and this sweater is a perfect example.  the body is black cashmere, and there is handmade navy lace through the sides.

lace 1 lace 2 the chanel sunglasses from the same post also have a lace detail – handmade lace is pressed into the plastic.  if you run your hands along the edge, you can actually feel it.lace 3
