Night stand upgrade

I’ve had these cute IKEA tables as nightstands for a dozen years. While I love them, the lack of storage was bothering me.

When I found these marble-topped nightstands on clearance at CB2, I knew they would make the perfect replacement. The drawers are thin but hold just enough to keep the surface clear. Plus the bottom shelf hides wires and chargers.

The IKEA tables are now in a guest room because I can’t bear to part with them just yet.

Minimalista by Shira Gill

We have been in our house for almost 2 years, and I can already see how much the amount of STUFF we have has expanded. Part of that blame can be put on our babies (one fur, one human), but I am guilty too of buying more because I now have the space. I’ve spent the last few weeks sorting through closets and cabinets, and a huge help in my process has been the below book. I’ve Marie Kondo’ed many times throughout the years, but that philosophy had me at a roadblock. A baby bottle rack doesn’t spark joy, but unfortunately does need to live on our counter. Gill goes space by space and offers practical advice for how to go through what you have and decide what to keep. I love her question about how you want your space to feel, and it is one that I keep coming back to.

Winter essentials

Since this is my first winter in the suburbs where I am consistently leaving the house, I thought I would share a few items that help me through daily life (walking the dog, daycare drop offs/pickup, driving, etc).

The recent snow and ice made me reevaluate my shoe choices. I wanted boots with a thick sole that I could wear on slushy sidewalks, but looked nice enough for errands around town. I got these rain resistant Freda Salvador boots during a sale and love them.

Unlike when we lived in the city, I don’t want bulky layers to keep me warm. They don’t feel great while driving, and I find myself shedding everything as soon as I enter the grocery store. My new revelation is a merino base layer under a thinner sweater. I like this one from Heimat, and the gorgeous cuff looks great peeking out from under sweaters. I’ve also never been a scarf person, so this balaclava from Nadaam keeps my neck and head warm without me feeling strangled. It’s also easy on, easy off as I’m going about my day.

I do still have my huge puffer from my city walking days, but got this sleeker yet still warm coat from APC (sold out now) for my current life. The photo is deceptive – the shape is oversized but the quilting is thin. It’s comfortable to wear for long neighborhood walks but also not too bulky for getting into and out of the car.

Finally, I am in love with cashmere socks. Why didn’t I wear them sooner? I like these from J.Crew, which I picked up when they were 50% off. I wash them with my other clothes (on cold) and lay flat to dry, and they are holding up great (especially since I wear each pair multiple times a week). I do use a sweater shaver on them sometimes but that is more because sweater shaving has become therapeutic for me. More on that later.

Sitting room reveal

No room is ever truly “complete,” and I know that our sitting room is not yet complete. I definitely want to have a central fixture installed in the ceiling, and a ticking stripe cushion made for the bench. Since both of those are high expense projects, I am going to “reveal” the room for now.

The sitting room in the listing photo.

The room with our furniture in but no decorations (other than some pictures on the wall).

The sitting room now. New paint from Benjamin Moore and Farrow and Ball, and new window coverings from Everhem. This room also functions as my office, so I wanted a separate “zone” for work.

Bookcase details before and after. I painted the back wall to look like it was part of the built in, and replaced the glass shelves with wood. The color is Farrow & Ball Stone Blue No. 86.

Loewe favorites

My most used bags these days are from Loewe. The leathers are soft and tactile, yet withstand my daily activities (including a baby and dog)! I also love that the logos are small and not flashy. Here is a peek at my small collection.

This black tote is great for travel because it folds down completely flat, as shown above.
