now that we are in the middle of winter in nyc, i thought i would share my 3 favorite winter essentials from target. target is probably the store i miss most living in this city, so i stock up on these when i am home in tennessee.
{from bottom to top: 1) t-shirts in gray and black; 2) 3-pack of warm socks; and 3) wool gloves that are touchscreen compatible}
the gloves are my favorite because they are only $11 and you don’t have to take them off to use your phone. i don’t know about you, but i am constantly losing my gloves in the winter…

i hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. although the health and happiness of my friends and family is the best gift i could ask for, here are a few things that were tied for second.
{manolo blahnik snakeskin bb’s (70% off at barneys!), mary green silk eye mask, princesse tam tam veruschka set}
these shoes deserve another look.

as the new year approaches, i am focusing more on how to properly care for the things i own and love. one important change i have made is taking the time to hand wash sweaters and delicates.
i use the laundress products and love them. while they seem expensive at first, they are much cheaper than 1) drycleaning or 2) buying new things because you didn’t treat the things you had properly. also, their stain solution is a miracle worker, and has removed every single stain i have ever used it on (including red wine on silk!).
the company has a great series of youtube videos on how to wash everything.

i am constantly in the process of limiting my possessions to only those things that i truly love and need. when you live in a small apartment, every item needs to earn its place. i have also posted on essentials here and here, so it is time to move onto lingerie.
these are the only five bras i own (and need). good quality underwear often isn’t cheap, but in my experience, it lasts much longer, so the added expense is ultimately worth it.
although it probably sounds obvious, when putting together bra essentials, it is important to think about the kinds of clothes that you wear first. for example, i never wear strapless or spaghetti strap tops, so i have no use for a strapless bra. however, i wear a lot of silk shirts, so i need a thin nude bra to go underneath them. someone else’s bra collection probably looks entirely different.
also, i think every woman should be professionally bra fitted, at least every other year. and victoria’s secret doesn’t count. i have taken so many of my friends to be fitted at a local lingerie store (or nordstrom’s), and they are amazed when it turns out they have been wearing the wrong size.
{from top to bottom: 1) t-shirt bra; 2) thicker padded bra to wear under sweaters; 3) thin nude bra to wear under silk or other potentially see through shirts; and 4) plunge bra for low cut shirts}
and one just because. this one by fleur of england is 100% silk and trimmed with the most beautiful handmade lace.

since i lost my razor while i was traveling in asia, i thought it was a perfect opportunity to try harry’s. co-founded by one of the co-founders of warby parker, harry’s is committed to offering great razors and accessories at a fair price.
i bought the truman set in navy, and was thrilled when i saw the package that arrived.
the kit includes a razor, two extra blades, and shave cream, all for $15.
the packing is simple yet gorgeous. when i used the razor for the first time, i was thrilled at how close the shave was.
i am a harry’s convert and will not be going back to drugstore razors again.

i tried this recipe for coconut cupcakes on a recent rainy afternoon.
they were so delicious that i may have eaten them for breakfast the next morning…

i have traveled more this year than ever before, and these five purchases have proven to be worth every penny.
#1 classic black carry on. i initially balked at spending so much on a suitcase, but years later, it still looks gorgeous. mine is anya hindmarch, but any classic style in a dark color will do.
#2 lightweight tote bag. this longchamp tote is the perfect size on its own for an overnight trip, and matches my carry on for when i am traveling for a few days. as a care tip, i wipe down any stains on the tote or suitcase with baby wipes before i store them.
#3 preprinted packing list. i am one of those people who always forgot something, but this pad now saves me. it lists everything you can think of (organized into helpful categories), and you can simply tear off the page when you are done.
#4 wool shawl. this shawl has been around the world with me. it is warm yet light, and it is large enough to use as a blanket. the blue leopard also adds a little extra to any outfit.
#5 small point-and-shoot camera. i use this camera for almost every photo on this blog. while i do have a digital slr, i usually find myself reaching for this instead because it is so easy to travel with. in addition, considering that it is a point-and-shoot, i think the photo quality is excellent.

while i was digging around on the internet this weekend, i discovered this inspiring and interesting clip on claire chambers, journelle’s founder. i didn’t know much about the company before i stopped into their store, but after watching this, i am thrilled that i had the opportunity to support her business.
