even though i have a dining area, i feel like i do everything sitting on my sofa using the coffee table.  maybe i need more comfortable dining chairs.

abc carpet and home

30 Saturday Apr 2016

if i had to pick a store in nyc to spend my last days in, it would definitely be abc carpet and home.  for those of you who have never been, it is a bigger, more eclectic, and sadly more expensive version of anthropologie.  i always find something there that inspires me, and luckily the prices are so out of my reach that my wallet is happy.

i stopped in last weekend, though, and they were having a sale on french linen towels and napkins.  oops.

vintage napkins

but look how pretty.

interior inspiration

10 Tuesday Nov 2015

i happened to pick up a copy of french elle decor when i was in paris in september, and found myself struck by this lovely parisian apartment.  i recycled the magazine, but not before scanning these pages.  this home is both clean yet warm, and chic yet very livable.  who wouldn’t want to soak in that tub for hours?

i’m considering ways to change up my apartment decor slightly, and i think this is a great place to start.

also, i don’t speak any french, so i couldn’t tell you if this article is interesting or not.  for those of you who do, i hope it is interesting!1104_001 1104_001 3 1103_001 1105_001

france shopping

i did my best while i was in france to keep my shopping in line with my new marie kondo’ed apartment – i did not purchase anything that did not spark joy.  i also tried to focus on buying things that would both serve a purpose in my life while also reminding me of my wonderful trip.

here is what i came home with:

france shopping{from top:  woven market basket with leather handles; eric bombard cashmere sweaters (side note, the black has navy lace panels down the side – it definitely deserves its own post); chanel cat eye sunglasses; blue stuffed elephant from tartan et chocolate; lavender-filled satchets}

bedroom makeover

14 Monday Sep 2015

my apartment makeover is continuing in baby steps, mostly because of the crazy amount of traveling i have been doing this year.  next up is the bedroom.

here are some before pictures from the day i moved in:

bedroom before 1 the same sad taupe wall paint.bedroom before 2 with furniture.  why is there a random shelf in the corner???hallway beforehallway from bedroom looking into the bathroom (also pre-makeover).

and now the best part – the after.

bedroom after 1 i got a proper bed from anthropologie to replace the metal frame my mattress had been on.  bedroom after 2 gorgeous bed linens, marble table lamp, and rug also from anthropologie.  i tend to stalk their sale section for home goods.

the mirrored chest is from one kings lane.bedroom after 3you can see that not much changed.  i painted the walls white and added furniture and accessories.

i got this print from a vintage store in philadelphia when i was visiting for a friend’s wedding.

arta look at the hallway after.hallway afterother than the paint, the only change was the light fixture.

i replaced the standard issue light with something much more lovely.

the life-changing magic of tidying up

like most people, i have been finding myself short on time these days.  i have spent a lot of the summer running around, and while i have had some amazing experiences, i was feeling pretty run down.  on top of that, although i really try to keep an edited apartment and wardrobe, i was becoming overwhelmed by the amount of stuff. my home was become more a source of stress and less the refuge i wanted it to be from hectic city life.

book

my good friend sarah from work was raving about this book, and i thought it was worth a try.  honestly, after a crazy week going through every drawer and cabinet in my apartment, i can say i am a convert.  plus, now every time i open my closet, i smile.  wanna take a look?

closet 1 like items with like, and then arranged lightest to darkest.closet 2 i still need to make better use of the vertical space, but it works for now.closet 3 tank topscloset 4 i don’t think my workout clothes have ever looked so pretty.closet 6marie kondo is right – folding sweaters vertical is so much better.  this method has created so much more space and has helped prevent wrinkles.

anyone who has spoken to me over the last few weeks knowing that i am a raving lunatic about this book now.  just a fair warning though – you might want to keep your family and significant others away if you try out the method.  a very important part of the process is thanking your belongings before you donate or recycle them, and i have to tell you, there is nothing like showing your boyfriend how crazy you are by spending a weekend talking to your spoons.

the kensington hotel, london

last month, i spent a whirlwind 36 hours in london for a business trip.  since i was there for such a short period of time, i wanted to stay in a new neighborhood.  i chose the kensington hotel, and boy, i haven’t had such strong decor inspiration since i was at hotel thoumieux in paris.

the kensington is such a perfect mix of english eccentricity and modern glam.  i love the colorful but subdued lounges, and of course the marble in the bathroom was lovely.  every time i turned a corner, there was something new to see (or a chess board, inviting me to sit).  the location is also fantastic, and the guest service was exceptional.

17oh yea its raining.  because its london.

entry makeover

19 Tuesday May 2015

this is probably one of my smaller before and afters, but i really do love the changes i made in my apartment entry.  the entry was painted the same shiny taupe as the rest of the apartment, and it had a sad, standard-issue light.  it also had a weird, combo hanging hook situation.

hallway before 1 the aforementioned sad, standard-issue light.hallway before 2and here is the after.  it feels much calmer, and cleaner.

not sure why this picture is crooked…hallway after 1beautiful clear glass chandelier.  just feminine enough.hallway after 2hallway after 3

kitchen before and after

24 Tuesday Mar 2015

as with my bathroom makeover, i tried to be smart when deciding what to replace in the kitchen.  certain things, like the tile and countertop, would not have been my choice but were perfectly fine.  however, the green ceiling (again, high gloss paint…why???) had to go.  here is an unceremonious before shot from right after i moved:

kitchen before the holes are from a shelf that i removed.  this kitchen actually has a lot of storage, so it didn’t need any exposed storage in my opinion.  i think you can see the glossiness from the reflection of the light fixture on the wall.kitchen green oh that green.kitchen light before this was a pretty standard issue light, but did nothing for me.  also, it was brushed chrome, and i ended up switching all the metal to polished chrome.faucet before this faucet looked sad.  and leaky.  it probably leaked because it also felt sad.

and now, what you really want to see, the after:

kitchen after

fresh coat of paint in benjamin moore’s decorator’s white, pearl finish.  i know that kitchens and bathrooms shouldn’t have flat paint, but i refuse to use high gloss paint on walls.
kitchen after 2gorgeous gray glass tile mosaic from home depot.  since i couldn’t change the counters, i decided to work with them.  i think it makes the whole kitchen look much more expensive.kitchen backsplash after and my new faucet.  if it was possible to marry a faucet, this baby would have my heart.  it is grohe, and it is worth every penny.  kitchen faucet after and the light was switched for something a bit more modern, to go with the new fixtures.  thanks to restoration hardware.kitchen light afterall in all, i’m thrilled with the changes.  i didn’t end up doing much (paint, faucet, backsplash, new cabinet hardware, and new light fixture) but i think it feel much calmer and sleeker now.

i have been looking for a better way to store my lingerie collection, but my bedroom is too small for a full size dresser.  i found this gorgeous mirrored tall chest on one king’s lane, and it fit perfectly into this little nook.

i love opening the drawers every morning and seeking all the lace peeking out.

lingerie chest the ocd in me arranged my sets according to bra types.  these are my black and nude padded bras.storage 1 these are wired, non-padded bras.storage 2

not pictured are my wireless bras and my silk camisoles to wear under blouses.
